Remepy and Merck KGaA Partner to Explore AI-Enabled Hybrid Drugs Across Multiple Therapeutic Areas

Overview

Remepy has entered a collaboration with Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, to explore the development of Hybrid Drugs that combine pharmacological therapies with AI-enabled digital therapeutic interventions.

The partnership will initially focus on rare tumor programs in the U.S., with the potential to expand into additional therapeutic areas.

The News

Remepy and Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, have announced a strategic collaboration to evaluate Hybrid Drugs, an emerging therapeutic category that combines conventional medicines with personalized digital therapeutic protocols delivered through a mobile application. The initial collaboration will target selected U.S. programs in a rare tumor indication while establishing a framework for potential expansion across Merck KGaA’s broader therapeutic portfolio.

Remepy’s Hybrid Drug platform integrates medication with AI-enabled, evidence-based motor, physical and cognitive interventions designed to deliver personalized, adaptive treatment and improve clinical outcomes. The collaboration comes as evolving regulatory frameworks, including the FDA’s Prescription Drug Use-Related Software (PDURS) guidance and Software as a Medical Device (SaMD)-drug combination pathways, create clearer routes for integrating digital therapeutics with pharmaceutical products.

The companies also see Hybrid Drugs as introducing a new commercial model by combining medicines and digital therapeutics into a single reimbursable prescription product.

Industry Perspective

Advances in digital health regulation and AI-enabled medical software are accelerating the convergence of pharmaceuticals and digital therapeutics. Hybrid treatment models are gaining interest as healthcare shifts toward integrated, personalized approaches that combine medication with behavioral and therapeutic interventions.

Strategic Impact

The collaboration positions Remepy and Merck KGaA to explore a new class of combination therapies that could enhance treatment efficacy while expanding the role of digital therapeutics in routine care. If successful, the partnership could establish a scalable framework for integrating AI-powered digital interventions into pharmaceutical development across multiple disease areas.
