Amwell Study Finds Proactive Digital Mental Health Support Improves Engagement and Long-Term Outcomes Among College Students

Overview

An independent, NIMH-funded randomized trial published in Nature Human Behaviour found that proactive digital mental health support using SilverCloud by Amwell improved engagement and reduced the prevalence of mental disorders among at-risk college students.

The study screened nearly 40,000 students across 26 U.S. colleges and universities and included 6,205 students at clinical or high-risk levels for anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.

The News

An independently led, NIMH-funded randomized trial published in Nature Human Behaviour evaluated SilverCloud by Amwell among 6,205 college students at clinical or high-risk levels for anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. Researchers screened nearly 40,000 students across 26 U.S. colleges and universities and proactively offered digital support to students identified as being at elevated risk.

Students offered SilverCloud were more than twice as likely to participate compared with those offered traditional behavioral health solutions, with participation rates of 74.4% versus 30.2%.

Compared with screening and referral to in-person care, digital behavioral healthcare was associated with a 4.3% lower prevalence of any mental disorder at six weeks, 4.9% at six months, and 3.8% at two years. The impact was consistent across student populations, including minoritized students and those experiencing financial stress.

Researchers estimated that the 3.8% lower prevalence at two years could translate into approximately $1.18 million in avoided mental health-related costs within the study sample. The findings support proactive digital intervention as a scalable approach to improving access and long-term mental health outcomes.

Industry Perspective

The study highlights the potential of proactive screening and digital intervention to move mental healthcare upstream, particularly in populations where traditional care pathways often depend on individuals seeking help themselves.

Strategic Impact

The findings strengthen the case for digital mental health programs as part of broader care strategies for universities, health plans, and other organizations seeking scalable, evidence-based support. For Amwell, the results add independent evidence supporting SilverCloud’s role in proactive, population-level behavioral healthcare.
